Shoulder Pain After a St. Louis Auto Accident

June 7, 2019 by Christopher

It’s not uncommon for people to start experiencing these pains after some time has passed since the accident.

There are many injuries a person can sustain after a car accident. Missouri law states that if you are the victim of a car collision, then the at-fault driver is liable for damages. That way, you can potentially cover all your medical costs or property damage.

Injuries are sometimes visible – but not always. In some cases, car accident victims can be left with serious pains that they may have to manage the rest of their lives. A common area where you could experience these pains is the shoulder.

Understanding Your Symptoms

When you try to brace yourself right before the impact, which is sort of a reflex most people have, the position you are placing yourself could be very dangerous to your shoulder, causing damage to the ligaments or joints.

Additionally, you could also suffer direct blows to the shoulders, be injured by the seat belt or be jerked forcefully inside of the vehicle. All of these examples could cause shoulder pain. One study found that those who suffered neck injuries were also more likely to develop shoulder pain as a result.

The treatment for these issues can vary, and depend greatly on what exactly caused them in the first place. If there is damage to the bone structure of the shoulder, you may even need surgery to repair it. While a lot of these issues are fixable if you seek medical attention immediately after the injury, it’s not uncommon for people to start experiencing these pains after some time has passed since the accident.

Getting Compensated

In any injury claim, there is always the question of how much you should get for the injuries you have. Generally speaking, the amount you get has to account for three main things:

  • The medical costs you gather because of the accident;
  • Any lost wages;
  • Property damage.

It’s why you need to keep all relevant documentation of your accident on hand. Your St. Louis car accident attorney will use them as palpable evidence of how much the car accident cost you, and negotiate a settlement with the at-fault party.

When there are high medical costs and several missed paychecks, the settlement will generally be higher. You need to be compensated to be able to get over this difficult period, not necessarily get a financial gain from it.

However, there is also the issue of your quality of life. If the pain is severe, you may be unable to take part in activities that would otherwise bring you pleasure, and your lawyer could then argue for a higher settlement.
